Adventure touring in Nevada
Drive twenty minutes past the last casino and Nevada changes completely. Red sandstone walls stack up at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area outside Las Vegas; hundreds of miles northeast, alpine lakes sit under the peaks of the Ruby Mountains. In between lies more high desert and raw mountain range than almost any state can claim. Guided trips make that country legible: rock climbing on the sandstone, hikes through canyon and basin, horseback rides along trails people have used for a very long time.
The water surprises people too. Lake Mead, the huge reservoir on the Colorado River, hosts guided kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and boat tours that work its coves and cliff-lined shorelines. Up north, the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe pairs famously clear water with steep trail country in the surrounding Sierra Nevada. On both, a good guide does more than steer: reading the terrain, explaining the ecology, and turning a scenic day into one you actually understand.
The state's spread of elevations means the season never really closes; it just moves. Spring and fall are the desert's hours, that's when the petroglyphs and fire-colored rock of Valley of Fire State Park are best explored on foot. Summer sends everyone uphill for high-elevation hiking, mountain biking, and lake days. Winter buries the upper ranges in snow, and guided snowmobile and snowshoe tours take over places like the Spring Mountains. Pick your month, and somewhere in Nevada the conditions are right.
