Adirondack Mountain Club
Lake George, NY
A nonprofit membership organization founded in 1922 and dedicated to the protection and responsible recreational use of the New York State Forest Preserve, parks, and wild lands. It has approximately 30,000 members organized into 27 local chapters across New York and New Jersey, and runs conservation, education, and natural-history programs.
New York-New Jersey Trail Conference
Mahwah, NJ
A volunteer-powered federation founded in 1920 when local hiking clubs gathered at the Log Cabin atop the Abercrombie & Fitch store in New York City. It builds and maintains a network of over 2,100 miles of trails across the New York-New Jersey region and is made up of roughly 10,000 individual members plus about 100 affiliated hiking and environmental organizations.
Green Mountain Club
Waterbury Center, VT
Formally organized on March 11, 1910 with a vision to make the Vermont mountains play a larger part in the life of the people. The club built and maintains the 272-mile Long Trail, the oldest long-distance hiking trail in America, and is a membership organization of roughly 9,500 members served by 14 regional sections that lead guided hikes and outings.
Potomac Appalachian Trail Club
Vienna, VA
A volunteer-based 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Vienna, Virginia and formed in 1927 to build a key section of the Appalachian Trail. Its more than 8,000 members care for a trail network exceeding 1,200 miles, along with 49 historic cabins, 47 shelters, and nearly 3,500 acres of conserved land across the mid-Atlantic.
Colorado Mountain Club
Golden, CO
A nonprofit outdoor-education organization formed in 1912 and based in Golden, Colorado, dedicated to Colorado's mountains through recreation, education, and conservation. With over 6,200 members and regional groups throughout the state, it offers members access to thousands of mountain adventures annually and was instrumental in the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Superior Hiking Trail Association
Two Harbors, MN
A Minnesota nonprofit corporation established in 1986 and headquartered in Two Harbors, dedicated to the maintenance, management, and promotion of the Superior Hiking Trail. The trail runs about 310 miles along the rocky ridges overlooking Lake Superior in northeastern Minnesota, and the association counts more than 3,200 members.
Wasatch Mountain Club
Salt Lake City, UT
A recreational outdoor club for adults based in Salt Lake City, officially founded on May 13, 1920 for those who enjoy hiking, ski touring, river running, and mountain climbing. It sustains a membership of roughly 1,200 individuals drawn primarily from the Wasatch Front, and members built the historic Wasatch Mountain Club Lodge in Brighton, now on the National Register of Historic Places.
Georgia Appalachian Trail Club
Atlanta, GA
A nonprofit organized on November 1, 1930 in Dahlonega, Georgia, responsible for the management and maintenance of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia in cooperation with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service. It has over 900 members who volunteer for trail work, guided hikes, and stewardship of the AT's southern terminus region.
California Alpine Club
Mill Valley, CA
A 501(c)(7) outdoor-oriented hiking and social club founded in 1913 when a small group of Bay Area hikers began Sunday-morning walks on Mt. Tamalpais. With roughly 700 members, the club has organized outings and hosted trips at its Mt. Tam and Echo Summit lodges ever since, with special interests in conservation, recreation, and hospitality.
Carolina Mountain Club
Asheville, NC
Established in Asheville on July 16, 1923, the CMC is the oldest and largest hiking and trail-maintenance organization in the Southeastern United States. Its membership of nearly 550 leads over 200 hikes per year and maintains 440 miles of trails in Western North Carolina, including 94 miles of the Appalachian Trail and 150 miles of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail.
Cornell Outing Club
Ithaca, NY
Established in 1928, the Cornell Outing Club is a community of outdoor-lovers dedicated to getting Cornell and Ithaca community members outside. With over 100 members, it leads trips of all types and skill levels (including hiking, kayaking, and rock climbing), to destinations such as the Adirondacks and Catskills.
Appalachian Mountain Club
Boston, MA
The oldest outdoor recreation and conservation organization in the United States, founded in Boston in 1876 to explore and protect the White Mountains of New Hampshire. It now spans the Northeastern U.S. with 11 chapters stretching from Maine to Virginia, supported by about 4,400 volunteers who lead roughly 5,000 trips and activities per year.
Buckeye Trail Association
OH
A volunteer membership organization formed in June 1959 to build, maintain, and promote the Buckeye Trail, Ohio's state trail. At more than 1,400 miles it is the longest loop hiking trail in the U.S., traversing 47 counties and passing through more than 100 towns; legendary hiker Emma 'Grandma' Gatewood was a founding member.
Dartmouth Outing Club
Hanover, NH
Founded in 1909 by Fred Harris to stimulate interest in outdoor winter sports, the DOC is the oldest and largest collegiate outing club in the United States. Based in Hanover, New Hampshire, it engages over a quarter of Dartmouth students and runs a broad program of hiking, climbing, paddling, and skiing trips.
Florida Trail Association
Gainesville, FL
A private nonprofit founded in 1966 that oversees the volunteer effort to build, maintain, protect, and promote the Florida National Scenic Trail, one of eleven National Scenic Trails in the U.S. Based in Gainesville, it also builds and maintains hiking trails on other public lands and organizes members into local chapters across the state.
Keystone Trails Association
Harrisburg, PA
Formed in 1956 and headquartered in Harrisburg, KTA serves as an umbrella organization coordinating the efforts of dozens of local and regional hiking clubs across Pennsylvania. It provides, protects, preserves, and promotes recreational hiking trails statewide, and has been a licensed 501(c)(3) organization since 1981.
Mountain Club of Maryland
Baltimore, MD
A Baltimore-based volunteer organization founded in 1934 to help build the Appalachian Trail, and the oldest hiking club in Maryland. Members lead hikes every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, and the club also organizes backpacking, camping, and canoe/kayak trips while maintaining sections of the AT.
New Mexico Mountain Club
Albuquerque, NM
Founded in January 1952 by a small group of Albuquerque enthusiasts, the New Mexico Mountain Club is the state's oldest hiking club. Members take part in leader-led outings including hiking, climbing, backpacking, snowshoeing, scrambling, and car camping across New Mexico and beyond.
Obsidians
Eugene, OR
Founded in Eugene, Oregon in 1927 (initially as the Eugene Outdoor Club before renaming within the year), the Obsidians is a local club that educates people about the outdoors. Activities center on hiking and climbing in spring and summer and skiing in winter, and the club maintains an active outings program throughout the Cascades.
Ozark Highlands Trail Association
Fayetteville, AR
A 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization founded in 1981 to build, maintain, and enjoy the Ozark Highlands Trail across northern Arkansas. The OHT offers about 270 miles of hiking and backpacking through some of the most rugged and scenic terrain in the region, and the association is powered entirely by its volunteer members.
Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club
Kingsport, TN
A hiking and canoeing club based in Kingsport that began operation on April 28, 1946 with a hike to Clark Creek Falls. It maintains sections of the Appalachian Trail in northeast Tennessee and offers a year-round schedule of hiking and paddling activities; membership is open to Eastman employees, retirees, families, and program affiliates from the wider community.
The Mountaineers
Seattle, WA
An outdoor recreation, education, and conservation nonprofit founded in Seattle in 1906 with 110 charter members, over half of them women. The club offers a wide range of activities from alpine climbing to hiking, operates seven branches across Western Washington plus mountain lodges and program centers, and runs the publisher Mountaineers Books.
The Prairie Club
Chicago, IL
A nonprofit volunteer organization founded in 1908 that began by organizing hikes into the country as a way for Chicagoans to escape the crowded inner city. Outdoor activities and conservation have been core values since its first outing in April 1908, and the club played a prominent role in establishing the Cook County Forest Preserve system and the Indiana Dunes. It maintains an active hiking, paddling, and cycling schedule plus two member camps.
