Adventure touring in North Dakota
The Badlands of western North Dakota do not ease you in. Buttes drop away in bands of rust and gray, canyons cut through ground that looks solid until it isn't, and petrified stumps sit where forests stood millions of years ago. Theodore Roosevelt National Park anchors this country, and it's where most guided hiking and horseback trips head first. A guide here earns their keep: reading the terrain, pointing out what the erosion exposed, and finding the wildlife that the landscape hides in plain sight.
The Missouri River runs through the middle of the state like a spine. Near Bismarck the water moves at a pace that suits guided kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding; upstream, Lake Sakakawea spreads out wide enough to feel like an inland sea. Outfitters run trips past bluffs, historical sites, and stretches of shoreline where eagles and waterfowl congregate. When flows run high, some sections of the river system open up for guided rafting and float trips, the same water, a faster read.
East of the river, the state changes character again. Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area, up in the northeast, holds forested river valleys where operators run ziplines and mountain bike tours through the warm months, then swap to snowmobiles and cross-country skis once the snow sets in. Across the state, guided trips do the quiet work that matters most out here: getting you into remote country safely, and putting a person beside you who actually knows the ground, the ecology, and how to travel it well.
