Adventure touring in Arkansas

Two mountain ranges shape guided adventure in Arkansas. The Ozarks rise across the north, the Ouachitas across the west-central counties, and between them run hollows, bluff lines, and ridge trails that keep hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking guides busy most of the year. The Buffalo National River, America's first national river, cuts through the Ozarks beneath limestone walls, and its guided floats run the full range from lazy summer drifts to spring whitewater that demands a paddle plan and someone who knows the water.

Off the ridgelines, the state is stitched together by rivers and big reservoirs. The White River built its reputation on trout, and its guided fly-fishing and spin-fishing trips draw anglers from well beyond the state line. Beaver Lake and Lake Ouachita host guided kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and even scuba tours. Around Eureka Springs and Hot Springs, zipline outfits string cables over the treetops for a view of the hills you can't get from a trail.

The topography is varied and the climate stays mild through much of the year, so the calendar rarely goes dark. Horseback outfitters lead rides through the national forests, one of the better ways to cover Ozark and Ouachita backcountry without carrying it all on your own legs. Operators supply the gear and the judgment, a real advantage on the limestone bluffs near Ponca, where a guide turns intimidating rock into a first climb. Newcomers and veterans get matched to terrain that fits.

State parks and national forests anchor most guided itineraries. Petit Jean State Park pairs climbing with long-view hiking; the Ouachita National Forest opens up guided backpacking and ATV trips on designated routes. The outfitters who work these lands tend to take stewardship seriously, the trails and rivers are their livelihood, so trips come with an education in treading lightly, not just a route card.
