Adventure touring in Montana

Montana runs big in every direction: Rocky Mountain peaks in the west, prairie stretching east past the horizon, and rivers threading the whole thing together. Outfitters here have a lot to work with. Glacier National Park anchors the north with cold lakes and hard, glacier-carved terrain, and rivers like the Flathead give rafting guides real water to run. A guided trip in this state can mean an afternoon on whitewater or a week walking ridgelines, and the country is generous enough to hold both.

Summer and fall are when Montana's guide economy hits full stride. The Yellowstone River draws fly anglers from everywhere, and the guides who row it daily know which banks hold fish and which don't. Horse packers ride clients into the Absaroka-Beartooth, where the trail is the only road and wildlife shows up on its own schedule. Climbing guides put ropes up on serious rock; zipline courses hang riders over valleys. What a guide sells is access, the remote, hard-to-reach corners of the state that most visitors would never find alone.

Then the snow comes, and a different set of operators takes over. Snowmobile guides run tours out of West Yellowstone and the mountains near Bozeman, on groomed trails and off them. Backcountry ski and snowboard guides read the snowpack around Big Sky and the Bridger Range and put clients on untracked lines that would be reckless to hunt down solo. Frozen waterfalls open up for ice climbing. Winter here rewards the visitor who hires someone with the gear, the avalanche training, and twenty seasons of local knowledge.
