Mountain Biking in Washington

Washington runs from saltwater to summit to sagebrush. The Pacific coastline, the alpine spine of the Cascades, and the open country of Eastern Washington each demand different skills, which is why the guided scene here is so deep. Rafts run the Wenatchee and the Skagit, rope teams work the North Cascades, and sea kayaks slip between the San Juan Islands. Rainforest on the Olympic Peninsula, high desert east of the mountains: pick a landscape and there's an outfitter who works it.

The central Cascades hold the marquee objectives. Mount Rainier and Mount Baker draw guided climbing expeditions all summer, and the trail systems below them wind through old-growth forest and subalpine meadow. When winter arrives, the same country becomes snowmobile and backcountry-ski terrain, the kind you want an experienced guide for. Down in the river valleys, Leavenworth and Index anchor technical climbing and day hiking, and the rivers themselves carry guided fishing and rafting trips across the ability spectrum.

Away from the Cascades, the character changes completely. The Olympic Peninsula offers guided walks through the Hoh Rainforest, trips along remote stretches of coast, and sea kayaking in protected bays. Eastern Washington is drier and more open, horseback country, with fly fishing on the Yakima River and long snowmobile miles through the Colville National Forest in winter. Each region rewards a different kind of trip.

A guide is what makes most of this accessible. Operators bring the local knowledge, hold the permits, and supply the specialized gear that keeps a glacier climb or a whitewater run within reach of people who don't own crampons or a raft. The best of them also treat the landscape carefully, safety and stewardship are the working standards across Washington's guided adventure trade.
