Snorkeling in Idaho

Hells Canyon is the deepest river gorge in North America, and it's in Idaho. So are the Sawtooths, the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, and the Salmon and Middle Fork of the Salmon, rivers that anchor some of the best multi-day whitewater trips in the country. That's the scale the Gem State works at. Guided expeditions here go well beyond the rivers, too: rock climbing on granite, backcountry hiking, mountain biking, and horseback trips through alpine meadows and timber.

The terrain keeps changing as you cross the state. The Bitterroot, White Cloud, and Owyhee ranges break up high desert plateaus and river valleys, and each pocket has its own trade. Around Stanley and Ketchum, guides lead climbing and hiking days to alpine lakes and granite spires. The Snake River Plain to the south is a different world of strange geology. Up in the northern panhandle, lakes and forest take over: guided fishing, ziplining, and ATV tours do their best work there.

A great deal of Idaho is protected wilderness, and that changes what a guided trip means here. These are genuinely remote places, the kind where access runs through permit systems and quota seasons, and where logistics can sink an unguided trip before it starts. Outfitters handle all of it. You show up; they've already secured the permits, planned the resupply, and read the water. Class IV rapids or a silent high-altitude trail: either way, the guide is what makes the far country reachable.

The calendar matters as much as the map. Spring snowmelt loads the rivers and makes the rafting fierce. Summer opens everything at once: hiking, climbing, and the long multi-day river trips. Fall cools the trails, colors the drainages, and brings the guided hunting and fishing seasons. Then winter buries the mountains and hands them over to snowmobiles, backcountry skis, and snowshoes.
