Tubing in Maine

Maine runs on two kinds of wild: salt and timber. On one side, the granite cliffs and island-scattered bays of Acadia National Park; on the other, the deep woods around Mount Katahdin, where the Appalachian Mountains taper into spruce country. In between, the Kennebec and Penobscot rivers churn out some of the East's best whitewater rafting, and the Allagash Wilderness Waterway carries canoe expeditions for days at a stretch. The interior is where Maine gets serious. Around Moosehead Lake and the Katahdin region, guides run moose safaris at dawn, fishing trips on cold, clear lakes, and long snowmobile days on groomed trail networks that go on for miles. Baxter State Park anchors it all: the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail sits on Katahdin's summit, and guided climbing, mountaineering, and multi-day backpacking trips work its flanks. This is the state's wild heart, a long way from the lobster-shack coast.

That coast has its own trade. Sea kayakers work the rocky shores off Bar Harbor and the Midcoast; schooners run to islands you can't reach any other way. The calendar rules everything here, summer's warm water gives way to fall foliage, and operators pivot with it. Inland, the same shift plays out: summer hiking and rafting hand off to autumn foliage trips, then to snowshoeing, ice climbing, and dog sledding once the snow settles in. Guides carry the gear and the judgment to work these conditions all year.

A guide earns their keep in Maine. They handle the logistics, carry the specialized gear, and know things you can't get from a map: which rapid changes character at high water, where the moose feed in September, how the weather breaks over the western mountains. Whitewater in spring, foliage on foot in October, snow trails in February: the guide's job is to hand you the good part and keep the complicated part off your plate, especially in country this remote.
