Winter Day Hike Checklist

Snow and cold turn a routine trail into a different sport: traction underfoot, layers that manage sweat, and daylight that runs out fast. Build the kit around staying warm, dry, and moving, and turn around with hours of light to spare.

Common questions

Do I need microspikes or full snowshoes?
They solve different problems: microspikes (or crampons) bite into packed snow and ice on a firm trail, while snowshoes float you on top of deep, soft, unbroken snow. On a popular packed route spikes are usually enough; carry snowshoes when the snow is fresh or you may break trail.
