Guided caving runs across a wide range, and the difference between the ends of it matters when booking. Show caves offer lit walkways, handrails, and a paved interpretive route suitable for nearly anyone. Wild caving trips issue a helmet, headlamp, and kneepads and involve crawling, climbing, and squeezing through undeveloped passage. Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, and Virginia hold the densest concentration of commercial caves in the country, a consequence of the limestone karst that underlies the region. Cave temperature stays close to constant year-round, typically in the fifties, which makes caving one of the few guided activities that is genuinely season-independent. Many caves close seasonally to protect hibernating bat colonies from white-nose syndrome, and operators are also expected to run gear decontamination between trips, so published closure windows are a conservation requirement rather than an operator preference.
