Horseback Riding in Wisconsin

Lake Superior surf on one end, ancient unglaciated bluffs on the other, Wisconsin covers more ground than its reputation suggests. The Wisconsin River and a web of smaller waterways keep guided paddling and rafting trips busy statewide. The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest swallows hikers, horseback riders, and snowmobilers whole, and the Baraboo Hills throw up rock faces that keep climbing guides in work. Up north, the Northwoods is pine and hardwood forest broken by thousands of lakes and winding rivers. When the snow comes, the trail networks around Minocqua and Eagle River turn over to snowmobile and fat-bike tours. Central and southern Wisconsin play a different game. The Driftless Area, skipped by the last glaciation, is all steep river valleys, forested ridges, and exposed sandstone, tailor-made for guided hiking and rock climbing; Baraboo, next to Devil's Lake State Park, is the hub. East of there, the Door Peninsula pushes out into Lake Michigan with limestone bluffs, guided sea kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and ziplines strung over the shoreline. Two landscapes, both worth the drive, both better with someone who knows them.

Frozen trail in January, warm river in July, blazing hardwoods in October, the state never really goes off-season. A guided trip gets you the equipment and the safety briefing, sure, but the real value is the local knowledge: the put-in nobody posts about, the ice conditions that morning, the ridge where the color peaks first.
