Adventure touring in Minnesota

The "Land of 10,000 Lakes" undersells it. Minnesota's guided-adventure country runs from the basalt cliffs of the North Shore, where Lake Superior behaves like an inland sea, to the maze of glacial lakes and portages that make up the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). In the southeast, the Mississippi River Valley cuts bluff country that looks nothing like the rest of the state, and the central and northern state forests roll on for days. Each landscape has its own guiding tradition, and its own reasons to hire one.

Water is the main event. Sea kayaking guides run Superior's coastline past sea caves and lighthouses, reading a lake that punishes the unprepared. In the BWCAW, outfitters lead multi-day canoe expeditions into motor-free country where the loudest sound is a paddle stroke. The St. Croix, a National Scenic Riverway, offers gentler guided paddling and rafting through wooded valleys. And the fishing guides (walleye, muskie, bass), know which of those thousands of lakes is worth your morning, which is exactly the knowledge you're paying for.

Dry land holds up its end. The Superior Hiking Trail runs more than 300 miles along the ridgeline above the big lake, and guides lead everything from day hikes to full backpacking trips through old-growth forest and past overlooks that stop conversation. Blue Mounds State Park offers guided climbing on rock you won't find anywhere else in the state. Horseback tours cross state parks and forests at a walking pace the scenery deserves. Then winter arrives (reliably, emphatically), and guides trade canoes for snowmobiles, fat bikes, and cross-country skis on trail networks that stretch for hundreds of miles.
