Adventure touring in New Mexico

New Mexico earns the Land of Enchantment name honestly. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains stack up in the north, the Rio Grande Gorge slices a black basalt trench through the plateau, and the Chihuahuan Desert stretches away to the south. Guided trips are the way into all of it: horseback rides past ancient cultural sites, rafts through hard whitewater, ropes up desert rock. Most of this ground is public: national forests and Bureau of Land Management country, managed for exactly this kind of access.

The Rio Grande is the state's central artery, and river outfitters build their seasons around it. The Taos Box is the marquee run, a committing whitewater stretch through the gorge, while the sections downstream ease off into float trips where the wildlife watching is the point. Off the water, guides work climbing terrain in the Sandia Mountains outside Albuquerque and up in the Pecos Wilderness, matching routes to ability and handling the ropework so clients can concentrate on the rock.

On foot or in the saddle, the high desert rewards slow travel. Guided hikes range from easy walks through piñon-juniper woodland to hard alpine ascents that end at long views and hidden springs. Horseback outfitters cover the same country the old ranching families did (the red rock around Ghost Ranch, the trails of the Gila Wilderness), and a multi-day ride there still feels like the West before pavement.

The season never really closes. Winter buries the northern mountains, and guided snowmobile tours run through the drifted forests and high meadows around Taos Ski Valley and Angel Fire. For something quieter, snowshoe and backcountry ski trips with experienced guides get you into the winter woods at walking pace, a colder, stiller version of the same enchantment.
