New Mexico earns the Land of Enchantment name honestly. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains stack up in the north, the Rio Grande Gorge slices a black basalt trench through the plateau, and the Chihuahuan Desert stretches away to the south. Guided trips are the way into all of it: horseback rides past ancient cultural sites, rafts through hard whitewater, ropes up desert rock. The Rio Grande is the state's central artery, and river outfitters build their seasons around it.
