North Carolina runs from Appalachian ridgeline to Atlantic barrier island, and the guiding scene stretches the same distance. The west belongs to the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains National Park: rafting outfitters run the Nantahala and French Broad daily all season, climbing guides work the walls of Linville Gorge, and hiking guides lead trips through some of the oldest forest in the East. The Piedmont, in the middle of the state, works at a gentler register.
