Adventure touring in New Hampshire

Granite is the first thing New Hampshire teaches you. The White Mountains, Mount Washington among them, rise out of the ancient Appalachian chain, and everything from the rock underfoot to the weather overhead demands respect. Below the peaks, lakes and rivers thread through the state, from the broad Lakes Region to the deep forest of the Great North Woods. Guided trips are how most visitors unlock the harder country: expert instruction, safe navigation, and access to terrain that would otherwise stay out of reach.

The Whites carry most of the load. Operators lead rock climbing and mountaineering on granite cliffs, and guided hikes work sections of the Appalachian Trail along with the trail networks of Franconia Notch and Crawford Notch State Parks. When the weather warms, the Pemigewasset and Saco rivers host guided kayaking and rafting trips, the same mountains, seen from the water. When it doesn't, the region becomes snow country: guided snowmobile and snowshoe tours push into trail networks that run for miles.

The mountains aren't the whole story. In the Lakes Region, Lake Winnipesaukee and Lake Squam offer calmer water for guided paddleboarding and kayaking, often paired with wildlife viewing. Horseback tours move through forest and along the shorelines at an easier pace. Ziplines run at mountain resorts and adventure parks for anyone who wants the view without the climb. In every case the guided format delivers the same three things: local knowledge, the right equipment, and someone whose job is bringing you back in one piece.
