Whitewater Rafting in Nevada

Drive twenty minutes past the last casino and Nevada changes completely. Red sandstone walls stack up at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area outside Las Vegas; hundreds of miles northeast, alpine lakes sit under the peaks of the Ruby Mountains. In between lies more high desert and raw mountain range than almost any state can claim. The state's spread of elevations means the season never really closes; it just moves. Spring and fall are the desert's hours, that's when the petroglyphs and fire-colored rock of Valley of Fire State Park are best explored on foot. Summer sends everyone uphill for high-elevation hiking, mountain biking, and lake days.
