Adventure touring in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania stacks its adventures vertically: Appalachian ridgelines and dense hardwood forest through the middle, wild rivers and glacial lakes across the north. The Lehigh runs whitewater through the Pocono Mountains; the Laurel Highlands hold rough rock for climbers. A guide changes what's reachable here (the secluded trail, the clean line up the face, the stretch of river you'd never scout on your own), and the good outfitters run trips for every level.

The Commonwealth's public land is the real asset. State parks, State Game Lands, and the sprawling Allegheny National Forest give outfitters room to work: guided hikes along sections of the Appalachian Trail, mountain-bike expeditions on the dedicated trails around Raystown Lake. On the water, the Youghiogheny River Gorge carries Class III-V whitewater with a serious reputation, while the Susquehanna and Delaware move slower, kayak and paddleboard tours there often trace routes with real history under them.

North-central Pennsylvania, the region marketed as the 'Pennsylvania Wilds', is where the state gets genuinely remote. Winter snowmobile tours run for miles through state forest; summer brings horseback trips on wooded trails and guided wildlife viewing in country where the animals outnumber the people. Local guides earn their keep out here, both for safety and because they know where to look.

Old mountains and countless waterways shaped this state, and the adventure map follows the geology: historic coal country, lush river valleys, each with its own character. A guided trip is how you move through it efficiently: roped up on rock near the Susquehanna, reading rapids on the Lower Yough, or poking into ice caves on a winter outing with someone who has done it a hundred times.
