Adventure touring in West Virginia

They call West Virginia the Mountain State, and the Appalachians make sure the name earns its keep: deep river gorges, unbroken forest, and rock walls that draw climbers from across the East. The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is the headline act, big whitewater on the New River below sandstone cliffs stacked with climbing routes. Fayetteville sits at the rim, a small town that has organized its whole identity around guides, outfitters, and the people who hire them.

The Gorge is only the opening chapter. The Monongahela National Forest sprawls across more than 900,000 acres (guided hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and snowshoeing when winter arrives), climbing from hardwood valleys to high spruce forest with the wildlife changing along the way. Then there's the Gauley River, whose fall whitewater is famous, brief, and not for the timid. For a state this size, the wilderness runs remarkably deep.

Water shapes almost every trip here. In the Eastern Panhandle, the Potomac River offers gentler rafting and kayaking, often paired with history around Harpers Ferry. Smaller rivers and streams across the state carry guided fishing trips for trout and smallmouth bass. Add ziplines through the forest canopy and caves under the ridges, and West Virginia gives guides an unusually full toolkit, with the safety margin and local insight that this kind of terrain demands.
