Horseback Riding in Ohio

Sandstone runs the show in southeastern Ohio. The Appalachian foothills around Hocking Hills State Park hold towering cliffs, deep gorges, and recess caves carved over ages, and guided trips are the easiest way into them: climbing and rappelling on the rock, hikes that thread past hidden waterfalls, ropes and route-finding handled by someone who works this terrain every week. Operators supply the specialized gear and the local knowledge; you supply the legs.

The north belongs to Lake Erie. Fishing charters work the big water, while kayak and stand-up paddleboard tours favor the calmer reaches around the Lake Erie Islands, Kelleys Island and South Bass Island both reward a slow paddle past odd geology and old harbor history. Inland, the Mohican, Cuyahoga, and Little Miami carry everything from lazy scenic floats to genuine whitewater, with guides running safety and gear on the pushy stretches. Rivers are the backbone of Ohio's paddling scene, and they earn it.

Away from the cliffs and the water, Ohio's state parks and forests keep the calendar full. Wayne National Forest in the southeast has trail mileage suited to guided horseback trips deep into the wooded backcountry, and mountain-bike tours work similar country farther north. Zipline courses hang in the scenic spots, often bundled into adventure parks. The spread is wide enough that outfitters can pitch a trip at almost anyone, a slow family morning or something with real adrenaline in it.

Winter thins the crowds and changes the terms, especially in the northern and eastern counties. Ohio has no great ski country, but after a real snowfall the state parks and preserves turn into quiet snowshoe and cross-country routes, and some outfitters run guided ice fishing on smaller lakes when the ice is trustworthy. The trade is speed for silence: a guide, a packed trail, and woods with nobody else in them.
