West Virginia adventure tourism is built on rivers and on the reclaimed coal country of its coalfield counties. The New and Gauley rivers provide the most celebrated guided whitewater raft experience in the eastern United States — the Lower Gauley's class V rapids during fall dam releases draw paddlers from across the country. Seneca Rocks draws guided rock climbing and hiking to one of the most distinctive geological formations east of the Rockies. Guided mountain biking at Snowshoe Mountain Resort and in the Blackwater Canyon has grown significantly, and guided hunting for bear, turkey, and deer in the Monongahela National Forest and surrounding private timber land is among the most active in the Mid-Atlantic region.
