Horseback Riding in Kentucky

Sandstone arches made eastern Kentucky famous. The Red River Gorge Geological Area, inside the Daniel Boone National Forest, draws rock climbers from around the world for its steep, pocketed stone and dense concentration of routes, and the same country rewards people who never rope up. Guided hiking, backpacking, and zipline trips thread through old forest to waterfalls and overlooks that don't announce themselves from the road. Local guides matter here; the gorge hides its best features, and they know where to look.

Then there's what runs under the state. Mammoth Cave National Park holds the longest known cave system in the world, and its guided tours span the full range, paved walking routes for anyone, wild cave expeditions for those willing to crawl. Back on the surface, the Green River and stretches of the Cumberland River carry guided kayak, canoe, and whitewater rafting trips, best when seasonal flows are up. Paddling these rivers gives you the geology from water level, which is a different education entirely.
