Youghiogheny River Outfitters runs guided whitewater raft trips on the Upper Youghiogheny, a 9.5-mile class IV-V technical run that drops through Garrett County's mountain corridor in far western Maryland. The Upper Yough is dam-released from Deep Creek Lake and is widely considered one of the most demanding commercially run sections of whitewater in the Eastern United States, with named rapids like Bastard, Charlie's Choice, Heinzerling, Meat Cleaver, National Falls, and Lost and Found packed into a continuous mile-and-a-half stretch. Trips put in at Sang Run and take out at Friendsville, threading the Youghiogheny gorge through hemlock and rhododendron under the shoulder of Backbone Mountain. The river is reserved for experienced paddlers, and the operator runs strict pre-trip skills checks and tiered guide ratios on this technical water.
